Welcome Home

Home is a place where we can feel safe, comforted. Where we belong. And where we can thrive. Home makes all the difference.

Welcome Home is an initiative set up by Alight to welcome Afghan families seeking refuge. Starting in Minneapolis and expanding to be a resettlement program across the United States Welcome Home tackled both the basic needs of settling the new families, from setting up homes to offering a market to provide extra items that might have been missed by the other resettlement agencies, and the more delicate emotional needs such as building community.

As part of the team I was deeply involved in the development of the programs and outreach for Welcome Home. I aided with two of our main approaches for helping the families feel at home. They were designing community programming and building out AskAlight.

One of the biggest struggles resettling families face is isolation and loneliness when moving to a new country, culture, and language. Not only is there a barrier of movement, as often they cannot drive and are sent to cities with little public transport, but also there are no facilities in place to encourage connection and community building. At Alight we knew that people need this deep human connection just as much as the basics when resettling into a new environment. So we sought to build out some basic community programming.

AskAlight is a service provided to resettling families to provide an accessible platform to ask questions and collect resources to help the resettlement process. While our communitiy volunteers cannot answer legal questions they can provide quick and reliable answers and resources to point families in the right direction.

On the side are series of slides, insight group sessions, and community outreach posters all developed in response to live feedback from our community.
